Joe Louis became a national icon when he defeated boxer Max Schmelling in 1938 - emboding the American ideal of equality and defying the Nazi ideal of white supremacy. However, few know his origin story - a tribute to freedom and self-determination that extends far beyond Louis' lifetime.
